AAL Atlas

Overview

The Automated Anatomical Labeling (AAL) brain atlas is a widely used macroanatomical parcellation of the human brain that divides the cerebral cortex and some subcortical structures into discrete regions based on sulcal and gyral landmarks defined on a single T1-weighted structural MRI template (the MNI single-subject brain of a healthy young adult). Constructed through manual delineation by expert neuroanatomists on this normalized template, the original AAL atlas comprises 116 regions (including cortical, subcortical, and cerebellar areas), each assigned a unique label and index, with subsequent versions extending or refining these parcellations and adapting them to different templates and modalities.
